If Your Child Has Allergies, Look For A Teal Pumpkin This Halloween

Orange pumpkins have long been a staple of fall and Halloween for obvious reasons (hint: because they’re orange). However, you may have recently noticed a teal pumpkin or two in your neighborhood. The color choice isn’t for aesthetics – it has a special meaning.

What Does A Teal Pumpkin Mean?

Teal pumpkins aren’t random. In fact, they even have an organization that’s responsible for them – it’s the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) organization. The organization’s purpose is to raise awareness around food allergies and the dangers they pose, thereby making the world a more accommodating place for people living with such allergies. That’s why they created The Teal Pumpkin Project.

The Teal Pumpkin Project originated locally in East Tennessee, and has spread far and wide since its first year. If you see a teal pumpkin placed outside a person’s house at Halloween, you can approach knowing that you will be able to receive a non-food treat, if needed.

Food Allergies Are More Common Than You Think

While you may think food allergies aren’t common enough to warrant such an accommodation at Halloween, you would be surprised to find out that up to 1 in 13 children have one, according to FARE. While some children may only have minor reactions, others can have life-threateningly severe interactions. Unfortunately, most Halloween treats contain some of the most common allergens, including wheat, soy, eggs, milk, and nuts.

Want To Get Involved?

It’s easy! Simply stock up on some non-food treats, such as festive pencils & erasers, stickers, or glow sticks, and place a Teal Pumpkin on your doorstep. Just remember – even if it’s just 1 child out of 100 that comes to your door, it may mean the world to that one special kid to feel included.

Happy Halloween!
